Fashion, Film, and Falling Down the Research Rabbit Hole

Published on February 26, 2025

Today was pretty good! Blogging every day still feels a bit strange, but I’m committed to trying it for a month to see if it sticks. So far, I like having a space to share random thoughts without a specific audience. My diary still gets the more personal stuff, though.

I’m still watching The New Look, but progress is slow. At first, I wasn’t sure about a particular review I read, but now I’m starting to see their point. Some parts feel a little… off? It’s hard to pin down exactly why. The historical aspects aren’t really my main draw—I’m here for the fashion—but I have to admit, I’m learning a lot along the way.

Speaking of learning, I picked up two books from the library: Forties Fashion: From Siren Suits to the New Look and Fifty Years of Fashion. They’ll be great references for my story, which is going well! I mostly use books like these for inspiration—flipping through, taking some notes or photos, then returning them. I rarely read historical books cover to cover; I just grab the info I need. It’s a balance because, honestly, I love research way too much and sometimes it keeps me from actually writing.

On a different note, exciting news—I’m getting published in a magazine! It’s an older piece I wrote a year ago, and I’m thrilled it’s finally finding a home. Funny enough, I thought a different piece would be accepted somewhere else, but since I haven’t heard back and the deadline is creeping up, I’m guessing that one didn’t make the cut. Oh well! If not, I’ll either share it here or workshop it into something new.

I’ll also be updating my gallery today with some art! I did a drawing exercise using color palettes from Psychonauts characters, which has been super fun. So far, Benny and Amir are finished, and I should have Joe done by today or tomorrow—hopefully!
